US-Mexican Fallout Over Drug War
April 2010 | Ratings UpdateIn a recent television interview Mexican President Felipe Calderón appeared to alter his stance on the issue of leglalisation of drugs in Mexico, implying that at the very least the topic should be open for debate. In the same interview he reiterated his heavy criticism of the US's inability to control the flow of weapons across the US-Mexican border, which the president claimed is the route for around 90% of the weapons used by local cartels. Both comments point to a deterioration in relations between the two states over responsibility for drug trafficking, and suggest that Calderón could also be ramping up anti-US sentiment in a bid to boost his flagging support levels at home.
