Piñera Nominates General
March 2010 | Ratings UpdateTensions over the relationship between the military and the government have come to the fore following President Sebastián Piñera's decision to nominate General Óscar Izurieta, who had commanded the army until March 9, as deputy defence minister. The announcement prompted criticism from the opposition Concertación bloc, which argued that the brief intermission between the two roles undermined efforts made to subordinate military officials to civilian ministers since the collapse of the Pinochet regime.
