A Caribbean Underperformer
March 2010 | Ratings UpdateThe Dominican Republic's business environment continues to perform poorly in our ratings, scoring 42.8 overall, below the Latin American average of 47.2, and is even low by Caribbean standards, where the average business environment score in our ratings is 45.8. The country scores 40.1 in the infrastructure component of the rating, almost on par with the Caribbean average score of 39.8, but lags in the institutions score with 38.9, where the average Caribbean country scores 44.9 on account of high corruption levels. In market orientation, too, the Dominican Republic remains a Caribbean underperformer, with a score of 49.5, where the Caribbean average score is 52.7.
