Panday Refuses To Back 'No Confidence' Motion

Former opposition United National Congress (UNC) leader Basdeo Panday has withheld his support for a move by the new leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar in parliament to file a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Patrick Manning. Along with Couva South MP Kelvin Ramnath, the two UNC heavyweights insist that they should have been consulted by the new leadership if their support was necessary for such a momentous motion. Persad-Bissessar will need to secure their backing if the motion is to proceed. For the time being we believe that the UNC will continue to suffer from division at the top, which will restrict its ability to pose a significant challenge to Manning's administration.
