The new Uruguayan parliament, which assumed power on February 15, will be led by women in both the houses. Senator Luica Topolansky, President José Mujica's wife, took the oath of her 29 peers. Deputy Ivonne Passada was named as president of the lower house for the first of five years. Both women belong to the dominant Movimiento de Participación Popular (MPP) party in the ruling Frente Amplio (FA) coalition. We believe that the narrow majority for the FA in both houses will be crucial role in the new government's reform agenda.
