Accusations Of Nepotism Grow Louder
February 2010 | Ratings UpdateWe have decided to lower Panama's long-term political risk rating, as criticism of President Ricardo Martinelli's alleged nepotism grows both domestically and abroad. The most recent accusations of corruption come after the country's supreme court voted to suspend Attorney General Ana Matilde Gómez (appointed by Martinelli's predecessor Martín Torrijos). The vote to remove Gómez was split along party lines, raising serious questions over the impartiality of Panama's highest judicial body. As a result, we have downgraded the 'constitutional framework' of Panama's long-term political risk rating, taking the overall score to 64.9 from 65.3 previously.
