Trying To Save Face On Honduras

The Brazilian government is trying to delicately manoeuvre its position on recognising Honduras's new government after President Porfirio Lobo was sworn in on January 27. On the last weekend in January Brazil hinted that it may shift its stance on recognition, following its opposition to recognising Honduras's election after the military coup which ousted former president Manuel Zelaya last summer. Brazil's government will attempt to save face by building regional consensus through the Rio Group summit in late February, though we believe that a common position on recognising Honduras's new government will be difficult to achieve.
