Few Hopes For Political Overhaul

BMI View: By addressing the issue of legislative re-election, President Felipe Calderón is again showing his desire to remove political taboos that are preventing Mexico from becoming a major EM player. Unfortunately, we doubt the opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional will agree on the re-election proposal for fear of jeopardising their own 2012 electoral chances. We therefore doubt the reforms will not go far enough in streamlining Mexico's ineffectual policy-making process, obstructing the potential for future reforms.
