Severe floods along Panama's border with Costa Rica have left around 15,000 people isolated from rescue services. The heavy rain, which follows floods in the southern area of the country, along the border with Colombia, in November 2009, has caused considerable damage to the region's infrastructure, with roads particularly badly hit. The damage is likely to see the government come under pressure to provide both emergency and longer-term development funds to assist the area.
