January 2010 | Ratings UpdateOpportunities for Barbados to diversify its foreign business interests by developing business with Latin America are likely to increase in 2010, with a trade treaty with Mexico due to come into force, and negotiations with Chile already underway. The region remains largely untapped by Barbadian businesses, which have traditionally focused their attentions on the US and Canadian markets. One industry that stands to benefit from closer links with Latin America is tourism, which currently suffers during the summer period as cruise ships reposition to the Mediterranean. However, with the South American winter coinciding with the Caribbean summer, attracting visitors from the region would help to bolster year-round tourism revenues, in turn supporting the island's struggling economy.
