Bid For Re-Election Fraught With Risks

BMI View: President Daniel Ortega has surreptitiously managed to pull off a scrapping of rules preventing his re-election in 2011, in contravention of the constitution. The supreme court's ruling to suspend the ban in October, despite clear opposition in the national assembly, is a worrying sign for democracy in Nicaragua, underscoring a sharpening divide between the legislature and other Sandinista-controlled parts of the state apparatus.
