President Daniel Ortega's calls for indebted farmers to hold protests against high interest rates by microfinance banks has been taken quite literally by some debtors, as evidenced by a string of attacks. At the start of December nine Nicaraguan farmers were sentenced to between three and five years in prison for an armed assault on the Local Development Fund - a bank focusing on lending to the poor.
