Strong Reform Platform After Election Victory

José Mujica's election victory signals a smooth transition of government, and should augur well for reform momentum in light of an overwhelming parliamentary majority for the ruling Frente Amplio coalition. However, although we expect broad economic policy continuity in the new administration, we note that Mujica's leftist credentials and focus on social spending could result in a more interventionist approach to economic management.
