In November a Colombian court issued the longest ever jail sentence to an army officer, sentencing former general Jamie Humberto Uscátegui to 40 years for his involvement in the infamous 1997 Mapiripán massacre. While Uscátegui maintains his innocence, the court ruled that his failure to respond to repeated calls for help to stop the killings, carried out over a five-day period by right-wing paramilitaries, and for his failure to investigate after the killings took place.
