The CARICOM Commission on Youth Development has warned of a disjuncture between educational training and the jobs available to young people in the Caribbean. Arguing that young people are being left unprepared for the labour market, the commission notes that the 15-24 age group suffers from the highest level of unemployment in Barbados, despite there being skill shortages in key sectors of the economy. Should high levels of unemployment translate into increased social tension, we could see a reduction in Barbados' impressive public unrest score of 9, putting downward pressure on its overall short-term political risk rating.
