Canada and Panama have revealed that negotiations over securing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are drawing to a close and are now pending a legal review. We expect the finalisation of the FTA to have positive implications for Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) in both countries, in line with adherence to the World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations. We believe that the administration of President Ricardo Martinelli will now turn its hand to finalising the US free trade deal, which has stalled in recent months due to concerns over Panama's status tax system.
