Moreover, García announced his intentions to transfer greater autonomy to regional leaders, by decentralising regional policy. These issues were echoed by the new Prime Minister Javier Velázques Quesquén a week later, when he addressed congress during his vote of confidence. Specifically, Velázquez reiterated the new cabinet's commitment to strengthen democracy by introducing mid-term polls for the legislature, and proposing second-round votes in regional elections to ensure the legitimacy of elected officials.
