Another Downgrade Amid Social Tensions
August 2009 | Political Risk AnalysisWe have revised down our social stability rating for the Dominican Republic by another 10 points to 62.5 following July's downgrade as public unrest and violent clashes have been on the rise amid frequent power cuts, widespread corruption and poor living conditions. Government policy has already started to respond directly to mounting social unrest, and we see scope for this to intensify as President Leonel Fernández runs out of options ahead of crucial legislative elections in 2010.
