Colom Under The Cosh

The explosive investigation of murder, labelled against current incumbent President Álvaro Colom clearly dominates our political concerns this month (see main story). Given the serious nature of the posthumous allegations, and fervent clamours from some quarters for Colom's resignation, we have drastically downgraded the 'policy continuity' component of our short-term political risk rating. What's more, we see downside risks to the 'characteristics of polity' component of our long-term ratings should the case rumble on over the coming months.
