Mauricio Funes, who heads the leftwing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), was sworn in as El Salvador's president on June 1. In his first deed in office, Funes signed a document re-establishing diplomatic ties with Cuba, after a gap of 50 years. The president, in his inaugural speech, also said that US President Barack Obama and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva were strong examples to prove that progressive leaders, rather than being a threat, can be a new, safe alternative for their people.
