Calderón's Government To Survive Swine Flu
May 2009 | Ratings UpdateWe are cautiously optimistic that the political fallout from swine flu may well have run its course. If initial fears of a pandemic had been realised, this would have been bad news for President Felipe Calderón's government ahead of July's mid-term congressional elections, in our view, given the criticisms that the authorities had been slow to act in the early stages of the outbreak. However, while we remain wary of government claims that the outbreak is now under control, a slowdown in the number of deaths does suggest that actions to curtail the spread of the virus have been effective, and this could rub off on Calderón's administration in July's elections.
