Multinational drugmaker Pfizer has revealed plans to relocate its Central American and Caribbean operations (excluding manufacturing) to Costa Rica by January 2010. The firm cited the relative political and economic stability of the country compared to its regional and Caribbean neighbours. The decision chimes with our political assessment of Costa Rica, which puts the country in regional top spot for both our short-term and long-term risk ratings, at 75.8 and 78.8 respectively. In our view, Costa Rica's stable political environment is an encouraging sign for medium-term inward investment once the global economy picks up.
