Fighting Corruption: An Uphill Battle
February 2009 | Political Risk AnalysisBMI View: The United Nations commission which was set up to investigate corruption of public officials in Guatemala is seeking to extend its mandate for a further two-years, which, in our view, is a crucial step in the commission's struggle to restore public confidence in Guatemala's crime-ridden institutions. That said, even with the extension of the mandate, we question to what extent the body can effectively counter institutional corruption in the country, particularly as Guatemala's economy look set to deteriorate in the months ahead.
