Fernández Pushes For Constitutional Reforms

President Leonel Fernández and a team of 15 experts are in the process of drawing up a proposal for constitutional amendments, which would see the number of articles in the constitution increase from 122 to 273. Among proposals to increase representation in both chambers of congress, and adding two senators to represent Dominicans living abroad, the central focus of the amendments revolves around presidential term limits. Fernández, who is currently in his second consecutive term as president of the Republic (and his third term in total), is arguing that experienced executive leaders of the Dominican Republic, who have completed two presidential terms should be allowed to stand for re-election after a four-year pause.
