While we previously believed that the 'no' vote would prevail as it did in December 2007, local polls suggest that President Hugo Chávez has seen a late surge in the polls, with some independent pollsters putting him in the lead. Regardless of the outcome of the referendum, we expect political tensions to reach fever pitch in the short term as clashes between opposition demonstrators and the government grow increasingly violent.
