January 2009 | Ratings UpdateGuyana's police force is joining forces with Canadian and US in a bid to stem the rising tide of cocaine being trafficked from Guyana to North America. Recent discoveries of large quantities of the drug, found in Canada, Miami, and other Caribbean countries, were reported to have been shipped from Guyana, and local press reports state that several key suspects have already been arrested. While we view the multilateral cooperation as a necessary step for successfully tackling the drug trade, we believe that even with this support, Guyana's lack of funds to tackle crack down on such a lucrative industry means that traffickers will continue to use the country as a base for operations.
