Violence Mars Election

El Salvador's upcoming presidential race is being marred by a surge in violence. On January 3-4, three people (including two police officers) were killed in alleged election-related incidents. The violence is a reflection of an increasingly tense political climate ahead of the presidential ballot, scheduled for March 15. Recent polls have shown Mauricio Funes, candidate for the opposition Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), well-placed for victory. We are concerned that further violence will ensue ahead of the vote. As such, we have downgraded the public unrest sub-component of our short-term political risk rating, pushing the overall score
