Tackling The Drug Cartels - An Unwinnable War?

BMI View: With the level of violence in Mexico's drug war reaching a record high in 2008, the success of President Felipe Calderón's hardline approach towards the country's powerful cartels is now in doubt. That said, with all major parties in agreement over the need to address drug-related crime, we do not expect the government to alter its approach in 2009, and as such believe both the level and scope of drug-related violence is likely to rise, which in turn should have a detrimental effect on Mexico's business environment.
