Guatemala's Territorial Claims To ICJ

A major step in the long-running Belizean-Guatemalan border dispute was taken on December 8, when a special agreement was signed between the two governments to allow the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to rule on Guatemala's territorial claims over Belize. Referenda are needed in both countries before the special agreement is approved, and although support is likely to be strong in Belize, given Guatemala's notable intransigence towards international arbitration this could be a potential stumbling block.
