Tightening Trade Ties

August 2006 | Ratings Update

The Dominican Republic is seeking to establish closer ties with its regional counterparts. Negotiations are under way with the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to develop a trade plan, which would allow for an extension of existing agreements on the movement of goods. This would include the free movement of labour and capital, as well as increased investor rights. The Dominican authorities have also expressed interest in joining a free trade deal between Canada and Central America, similar to that negotiated with the US. Some 1.6% of the Dominican Republic's exports were destined for Canada in 2005, down from 4.6% the previous year. If negotiations are successful, a trade deal could help Dominican exporters recover their declining market share.
