The attorney-general, John Jeremie, recently pledged that public officials would not be spared prosecution if found guilty of wrongdoing while in office. Jeremie’s comments came after a number of arrests of high profile figures (including former government ministers) made in relation to corruption charges. Many of the charges relate to the construction project of the Port of Spain Piarco International Airport, where it is alleged that millions of US dollars were stolen and laundered. The authorities are considering dropping charges against eight businessmen accused of money laundering in order to allow them to be prosecuted by the US justice system
