Date Fixed For Referendum

The popular vote on the expansion of the Panamanian canal will take place in October after the plan was approved unanimously by congress and signed into law by President Martín Torrijos. A poll carried out by the firm PSM Sigma Doc Panama showed that 84% of those questioned would take part in the referendum, and of those, two-thirds would vote for the project and 23% against. We expect some protests from social groups opposed to the scheme, but President Torrijos can be fairly confident that he can count on the support of the majority of Panamanians.
