Bolaños Begins Last Year Amid Protests
February 2006 | Ratings UpdatePresident Enrique Bolaños has begun the last year of his tumultuous term in office amid a series of organised strikes and street protests in the health, transport and judicial sectors. More than 2,000 health workers have been on strike for almost three months, bringing the already fragile system to a standstill. Meanwhile, bus operators have paralysed the capital with their protests. Against this background, president Bolaños has accused the Sandinista opposition of fuelling instability and violence ahead of the March 4 Atlantic coast local elections.
