UN Bid Gathers Steam
August 2006 | Ratings UpdatePresident Hugo Chávez has undertaken a whirlwind global tour to drum up support for his country's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations' Security Council. The US vehemently opposes Venezuela's candidacy and has thrown its full support behind Guatemala for the Latin America slot. However, US moves have been rather counter-productive thus far, and the Guatemalan campaign has lacked cutting edge. Venezuela appears to be the frontrunner at this stage, but we do not underestimate the US' ability to 'shape' global opinion.
