Chaos Follows Elections

Political risk has gone from bad to worse in Nicaragua following the controversial regional elections in November, which handed President Daniel Ortega's Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) a comprehensive victory. In addition to an uptick in violence across the country, the US government has decided to freeze US$64mn in aid earmarked to help fight poverty. Furthermore, the country's congress was suspended in late November, allegedly on the request of Ortega. Looking forward, there is little to convince us that the country will regain any semblance of political stability in the months ahead unless the regional elections are carried out
