UDP Conflict Damages Reputation

On October 6 Belize City Mayor Zenaida Moya secured the candidacy of her party, the United Democratic Party (UDP), for next March's municipal elections, despite strong opposition from within her own party. Moya beat the only other candidate for the UDP's ticket, Anthony Michael, by 3,961 to 2,916 votes. However, while Moya's win was convincing, controversy remains over allegations reported in the local press that the mayor misappropriated BZD90,000 (US$45,000) of taxpayers money to increase her own salary.
