Leonel Looks To Reform Constitution
October 2008 | Risk SummaryThe Dominican Republic's political ratings could be upgraded in the near future, depending on whether a recent constitutional reform package presented by President Leonel Fernández to congress in late September will be approved. The reform package seeks to boost citizen participation and presents a series of judicial reform proposals. Fernández also proposes to enlarge both chambers of congress to increase representation. This could see the country's 'characteristics of polity' score in our long-term political risk ratings climb above 60 (currently at 58).
