Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike - successive hurricanes and tropical storms - hit the island, destroying large portions of its agriculture and infrastructure. At least 425 people were killed, and more than 800,000 of the country's 9mn population were left in need of food, water, or shelter. The current season's food harvest was almost entirely destroyed, worsening the country's already precarious food supply situation.
