In September the International Monetary Fund (IMF) released the results of its Article IV consultation with Suriname. The report was positive, with the Fund praising the country's strong economic performance, underlining the importance of its fiscal and external surpluses, and noting the growth in foreign currency reserves and the reduction in overall indebtedness. It warned, however, over an accelerating inflation rate and suggested fiscal and monetary tightening was necessary to keep it under control. The IMF said that GDP growth in Suriname in 2007 was of the order of 5.5%, with a strong performance in both the mining and non-mining
