US Alienation A Risky Strategy

BMI View: President Manuel Zelaya is playing a risky game by increasingly marginalising Honduras' relations with the US. Indeed, the country's powerful business community has already voiced its disapproval of anti-US rhetoric from the government - unsurprising given just how important the US is to the local economy in terms of commerce and investment. While Washington has refused to be drawn into a war of words just yet, the potential for foreign policy instability and social unrest is a key concern going forward.
