Violence Escalating Ahead of Election

BMI View: Incidents of violence and widespread social unrest have cast a shadow over the upcoming municipal elections, pencilled in for November 9. Serious question marks over the legitimacy of the contest are surfacing, especially with regards to the impartiality of the electoral courts, provoking tension between opposition supporters and President Daniel Ortega's Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN). Regardless of the eventual outcome, the risk of a further escalation of violence is extremely high.
