The murder trial of former Surinamese military dictator Desi Bouterse was suspended in July after his defence lawyers questioned the judge's impartiality. Bouterse's defence team said that the judge's husband had free access to facilities belonging to President Ronald Venetiaan's National Party. Suriname's president is an outspoken opponent of Bouterse's. Judge Cynthia Valstein-Montnor ruled that the case should be suspended until the High Court ruled on the allegation of bias.
