A Risky Game

According to Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez, Honduras is discussing possible membership to the Alternativa Bolivariana para las Américas (ALBA), the Caracas-led economic and commercial alliance in Latin America. Honduran counterpart Manuel Zelaya has neither confirmed nor denied Chávez comments, but reiterated that the country was already an observer of ALBA. So far Nicaragua is the only Central American country to join the bloc, which is also made up of Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica and Venezuela. In the event that Honduras joins, the country risks straining relations with the US during a less certain time for free trade agreements such as DR-CAFTA.
