A Golden Opportunity Missed?

El Salvadoran President Tony Saca has accused the opposition Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) of aligning itself with Venezuela's socialist leader Hugo Chávez ahead of the presidential election next year. The FMLN attended a meeting of Alba Petróleos de El Salvador - a joint venture between FMLN mayors and the Venezuelan government set up in 2006 to provide cheap fuel for Salvadorans - in Caracas. Saca's comments are likely part of an attempt to win the middle class El Salvadoran electorate, who have been impressed with the more conciliatory stance taken by the leftist FMLN ahead of the poll.
