Ratings Update - Corruption Charges On Both Sides
July 2008 | Risk SummaryPuerto Rican Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá is still battling to save his reputation from the 19 counts of electoral finance misconduct, ranging from conspiracy to wire fraud, before the gubernatorial elections later in the year. A motion put forward by Vilá's lawyers denies all charges brought against him, charges which the Governor claims are irrelevant, defective, unconstitutional and a waste of tax-payers money. However, with ongoing investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigations against Senator Jorge de Castro Font, spokesman for the opposition Partido Nuevo Progresista, neither party can claim the moral high ground leading up to the elections.
