Trade Deficit On The Rise
July 2008 | Risk SummaryThe administration of President Leonel Fernández continues to work on a plan to prop up the Dominican Republic's economy at a time when soaring food and energy prices, and slowing global economic activity threaten the future economic performance of the country. President Fernández earmarked the Dominican Republic's crucial tourism sector as being particularly at risk of a slowdown in the US economy. It is particularly encouraging, therefore, that the number of tourist arrivals from the US and Canada in May have been up by 12.9% y-o-y and 21.2%, respectively.
