Guatemala's Interior Minister Vinicio Gomez, and Deputy Interior Minister Edgar Hernández, died in a helicopter crash on June 27. Pending an investigation, the fatalities occurred due to poor weather conditions north of the Guatemalan capital. The country's president, Álvaro Colom, granted both men the Medal of Merit of the Presidency, praising them for their services to the government. At the time of writing there has been no mention of possible successors to both roles.
