Crackdown On Crime
July 2008 | Ratings UpdateThe Honduran congress has rushed through new police legislation in a bid to come down harder on organised crime. The government has included measures in the law to reduce corruption within the police force, including drug tests and lie detector tests. The swift approval of the proposals came just before US President George W Bush signed a bill earmarking US$500mn in funding to help fight drug trafficking in Mexico and Central America. Increased police credibility would help to improve the characteristics of polity sub-component in our long-term political risk rating (which currently stands at 60.3).
