Nicaragua's supreme electoral court has annulled the status of two political parties - the Movimiento Renovador Sandinista (MRS) and centre-right Partido Conservador (PC) - in a move that we believe highlights the deep-rooted politicisation of the country's legal institutions. This move was engineered by the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) and the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC) in order to safeguard the country's bi-party system. The court approved the decision unanimously - unsurprising given that four of the seven magistrates are aligned with the FSLN and three with the PLC.
