El Salvador's congress approved a bill in June doubling the monthly subsidy given to public transport companies in a bid to keep prices under wraps. Bus and minibus companies now stand to receive US$800 and US$400, respectively, each month. Earlier in the month, bus companies put up fares by 40% to 35 cents at the start of June to pass on the burden of rising global energy prices (and, as such, the increasing cost of diesel) on consumers.
